Puxi EggsChange By Alex Zhuang, Grade 11, Puxi campus The Shanghai American School community has always been a tightly knit one, two campuses but one school. Over the weekend on February 12, a group of students from the Puxi EggsChange club scheduled a meeting with a handful of Pudong students who are officers in the Roots & Shoots (R&S) club, in the hope of extending the reach of EggsChange. The original proposal was to devise a system that would allow egg deliveries to faculty members at SAS Pudong, via R&S, sending eggs over for them to distribute on a weekly basis. Much to our surprise, near the beginning of the meeting one of the R&S officers usthat he had already drawn up a professional-looking form that their teachers could fill out for egg deliveries. The level of enthusiasm from our Pudong counterparts showed was very muchappreciated! The meeting proceeded smoothly as the proposal was initially discussed and the R&S officers grew familiar with the process. We introduced the purpose of the club: providing select farmers in Jiangxi with chickens, purchasing the eggs produced, and shipping them back to Shanghai. We also discussed our hopes for the near future. Some rough edges were ironed out concerning minor technicalities, but fortunately there were no major complications. And so, egg deliveries to Pudong have already begun, as we are sending 20 boxes over to the Pudong campus each week (though deliveries remain exclusively open to faculty and teachers for the time being). We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to work with our sister campus. Not to mention, it was very timely as the amount of eggs that was being shipped from Jiangxi had dramatically increased over the past few weeks — a staggering 100 boxes were coming in each week (a total of fifteen hundred eggs!), all of which had to be distributed with haste, as the boxes were quickly piling up. However, this was not our sole incentive for meeting with Pudong — by branching out and introducing EggsChange to the Pudong campus, we have taken what we hope will be one step closer to exposing our club to the larger part of the international community here in Shanghai. We would like to thank the students from Pudong for their collaboration and strong support, and we hope that the relations between the two clubs will strengthen in the months ahead! Jon Nordmeyer, Pudong teacher (and high school R&S faculty sponsor) receives an order of eggs.
Sorry for the late post!
To be honest, I didn't really have a clue what we were going to talk about during the meeting with Goodwin. I've heard other people talk about him before, but he just seemed like a generous supporter of our club and I didn't really pay much attention. But upon meeting him, I realized my assumptions were all wrong. His advice about not only Eggchange but also about life in general was very inspirational. He first opened up to us saying that even though his living conditions were poor and he couldn't afford to go to college, he nevertheless strived to pursue his goals and finally made it. He said his experiences are what made him want to help us. Having worked in farms before and aware of the conditions, Goodwin truly seemed like he cared. He was also very honest with us in giving feedback to us. He probed us with questions that we've never even considered before, and I felt we still had a lot more to improve. He also suggested we had to be more passionate and confident about our eggs, because we really had nothing to be scared about. He reassured us our eggs are of the best quality, being completely free range, organic, and living in the best conditions possible. He felt we just had to step it up a little bit more, approach others with more courage, and let them know how good our eggs really are. He also didn't forget to congratulate us for coming this far and reassured all my past worries and doubts would be fixed; I felt we all left with our confidence and hope restored. After the meeting, we went to get Shanghai's biggest burger :D It was like the size of a soccer ball! (okay maybe I'm exaggerating). The five of us (me, Weilin, Jinjin, Alex, Yingying) ended up sharing one huge burger, and we didn't even get to completely finish it. Nevertheless, it was a really fulfilling day! I Hyun two boxes of eggs were delivered to pudong for the first time ever via school vehicle! first step of eggschange going school wide thanks to the cooperation from pudong roots and shoots.
weekly update:
We delivered 43 boxes of eggs on friday! YAY good job I think this was the most we ever delivered at school in one day. Weilin and I went to the zhi geng nong discussion panel and a organic farmer's market today. The farmer's market because we wanted to check out the price they sell their "organic" eggs for.. you know, like scope out the competition. And Zhi Geng Nong is a website I heard about on the radio during CNY break and it sounded like a really cool website pretty similar to eggschange where they host a platform to connect organic farmers and shanghai consumers. The founder of Zhi Geng nong is really inspirational - she quit her job at shanghai daily and founded this website and she is more than 200k in debt because the website has not started earning money yet. this is the website: http://www.zgnong.com/ most importantly: I just heard from the jiangxi volunteer that there will be 400 boxes of eggs arriving in shanghai next wednesday............ The most we've ever gotten was100 boxes.Which means 400 boxes x 15 eggs = 6000 EGGS!!!!!!! there are so many boxes because it was CNY and you know how crazy train stations get during then... so we havent gotten shipments in a while. This is both good and bad news: good of course because the farmers are happy that their chickens are laying so many eggs! bad.. because i am very very worried about how we will manage to sell that many. The most we can sell in a week at school is around 40 boxes of eggs.... now time that by ten... T.T so..... hopefully we can start selling eggs in pudong soon and find stores to help us with them. ALSO, remember to post your intros! we want all of you to be a part of our website. upcoming events:valentines day brEGGfast sale 2/14*officer candidates meeting for all those interested in running 2/17 friday lunchcarpet auction 2/18*officer candidates have to email in a paragraph of why they want to run and contributions by 2/24 officer elections 3/2
For those of you who didnt come to fridays meeting (cough). we talked about possible silent auction ideas and introduced our new "blog".
We would like all of you to write an intro about yourself and submit it here on EDMODO before the end of CNY break. Your profile will be officially apart of our website and the whole world / parents/ teachers will be able to see the great world you have all been doing. (keep in mind your teacher might be reading your intro so keep it appropriate) We will post your intro onto our website under the new "members" page. In the future, you will each probably be assigned once to write a reflection about weekly events, and your post will be linked to the "intro" you have written about yourself. SO... things you can include in your introduction about yourself: -name -basic info about urself ..interests...grade wtv -what you've done so far in eggschange/ why you like eggs:) years you have been in eggschange (ex. 2010-2011) -PICTURE! Just post your intro as a post on to EDMODO and add #blog after it so our website manager (alex mang) will copy it on to our website. It's as simple as that, so please take a minute from your vacation and do this!! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! Ohmygod! Just got an email from Shanghai Family saying that we will probably be the COVER story for the April issue!!! They are going to interview us sometime after Chinese New Year. AHH SO EXCITED!!!!!!!! :D Eggschange could not have gotten so far without the support from every one of you! YAY!
Today Jinjin, I Hyun, Weilin, Alex M. and I went to Pudong right after school ended to attend a meeting scheduled for us and our sponsor, Goodwin Wang. I have to say, our talk with Goodwin was extremely inspirational! I hadn't met him before when Jinjin, Alex Z and Weilin did at the Auto Convention last year for the first time, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Yet now that I've met him, I'm so glad that EggsChange caught his attention and was glad to know he, someone so full of experience, thinks that our project is one worth his support.
The pointers that he gave us on our box design were pretty helpful, and he also gave us a short account of his own back story after giving us constructive criticism on what he thought we could improve on. Overall, I think hearing about Goodwin's path to success was the best part of the meeting, because it was actually extremely motivational. He told us about how he used to live in a village so poor that he couldn't afford to go to a good college in China even though he earned all A's in his classes. Upon finishing secondary school, he actually went to the countryside, to an area even more impoverished than that which our supported farmers live in! Talking about how harsh the conditions were on the countryside on which he lived for a couple of years, Goodwin inspired us by elaborating on how he persevered and eventually went to a good school and decided to give back to the countryside that raised him. After telling us that, he said "this is why I want to help your project." It was moving to know that he had such a personal connection to China's countryside, and that he wanted to give back to his own community. Oftentimes, we see that so many people who succeed forget to give back to the community that built them to become the successes that they now are; it was really great to know that someone with such a good heart was providing EggsChange with support. - yingying P.S. On another lighter note, after our meeting in Pudong, the five of us went to see out this restaurant that served the biggest burgers in Shanghai! We went to "Yasmin" and the burger surely didn't disappoint. It took all five of us to finish, and was surely a great way to end the day. P.P.S. Happy CNY. Good luck to everyone taking the SAT :) eggs are not only yummy to eat, they also make the perfect gifts for relatives and friends during chinese new year! talk to your parents and ask them if they want eggs this week! (and u can get them tmr) remember, we will have almost 80 boxes of left over eggs....
