The process of EggsChanging~in an egg-shell:
1. Farmers are selected in the rural village of GuanPi, in JiangXi Province, China.
2. Each of the farmers are provided with around 50 chickens and they are bred according to standard organic and free-range procedures.
3. After around half a year, the hens begin to produce eggs. The funds spent on feed and care will be coming from EggsChange’s budget and people who have “adopted” chickens.
4. The eggs are purchased from the farmers at a set price.
5. The eggs are shipped to Shanghai and are sold via EggsChange at a price of 3.33 RMB each. They can be purchased in boxes of 15 (50 RMB per box). Orders can be sent to our email or sent through out website.
6. The farmers are provided with a yearly income of 10,000 RMB at the end of the year to support their families and themselves.
FAQs
Why should I purchase organic eggs?
Organic eggs are definitely healthier than normal eggs. Our chickens are raised according to organic procedures and are free-range. There has been research that suggests that even though organic eggs are smaller, they have almost twice the protein while only half the cholesterol of normal eggs. Furthermore they also contain more nutrients and trace minerals that are essential to the body.
I live far from Shanghai, is there any way that I can help Eggschange?
Yes, if you are living outside of Shanghai, you can always help us in our fight against poverty by donating to us through Paypal. This money will be used to expand our project to help more farmers in Jiang Xi province. If you ever feel generous, please do not hesitate to donate.
Why are the eggs so small?
Because of the organic process, the chickens only consume natural feed with no additives and preservatives. This means that they do not grow as fast as the ones in conventional chicken farms. However, the chickens in conventional chicken farms consume feed with growth hormones and other harmful additives that can be transferred into its eggs and their meat, which would be harmful for the consumers.
Why are there eggs that are green/blue?
The chicken’s diet can influence the color of their eggs. This is why the color of our eggs are all distinctly different from that of conventional chicken farm eggs. Green and blue eggs are completely normal and as just as good as the next egg.
How are the chickens raised?
The chickens are raised according to standard organic procedure involving organic feed (a mixture of wheat bran, corn, bean powder, etc.). This mixture ensures that our chickens receive optimum nutrition and lay premium quality eggs. Furthermore, our chickens are free to roam the wild hills of Guan Pi village which means they are raised free-range.
You are merely a student organized group - where do the funds come from?
We get our funds primarily through donations. We have worked hard to raise awareness and gather funds in our school; raising a great deal of money through our “adopt a chicken” project. We have also been to social events outside of school (parties and meetings) to get more buyers and donors.
How many eggs arrive in Shanghai each week?
The specific amount of eggs that arrive per week is hard to determine and predict. However, currently we have around 3,500 eggs arriving per week. This number changes depending on the season as at different times, the productivity of the chickens change.
How much do you pay the farmers?
We buy the eggs at 2 RMB each but we sell it for more because we have to pay for the cost of the chickens, the feed, the shipping, and the packaging. The projected yearly income of the farmers was 10,000RMB per year. However, their current income is averaging a little less than 17,000RMB per year due to the high productivity rate of the chickens.
What are vouchers?
One voucher is equivalent to one box of eggs. Vouchers are sold in packs of five and cost 250 RMB each. If it is more convenient for you to use vouchers instead of paying for eggs each time in cash, please purchase them by contacting us by our email.
What if some of my eggs go bad?
You can tell an egg is bad by the smell after you crack it open. It is inevitable that some eggs will go bad, but the chances of this occurring are very slim. To ensure longer shelf live, please store your eggs in a cool environment (like the fridge!)
